lanier techincal college: medical technology and economical development center

Cumming, GA

Project Description:
Haines, Gipson & Associates, Inc. provided the consulting engineering services for a new 3-story, 50,400 sq-ft development consisting of medical technology classrooms, laboratories, and an economic development center. Design considerations included the introduction of a “looped” fire/domestic water use system in order to meet the NFPA requirements, improvements to utility connections due to “wear and tare” of the existing utility lines, and coordination of a natural gas delivery system with Atlanta Gas Light and the mechanical engineering consultant. For storm water management consideration, Forsyth County required that we provide water quality and channel protection volumes for the entire new impervious surface that was generated as a result of the development. HGA’s approach was to provide an Extended-Detention Detention Pond. By doing so, we would provide a permanent pool that allows pollutants to remain in the pond for a 24-hr period. In addition, HGA provided an aquatic bench that has approximately 5,500 sq-ft of cattail vegetation that will aid the natural removal of total suspended solids. Recently, the project experienced a civil audit, which was set in motion by the EPD. The design exceeded the expectations and met all requirements. As a result of the satisfactory marks, the Department of Technical Education is looking to use HGA’s model for future designs of detention ponds and water quality features. Other site design components included the conveyance of sanitary sewer lines tying to the existing infrastructure, the design of the associated storm water collection and conveyance systems, BMP’s, and other storm water pollution control and prevention measures complying with Georgia’s NPDES mandates.  In addition to the engineering design services; HGA provided permitting assistance and response to local / municipal comments, provided opinion of probable construction costs, and construction administration services for the Site/Civil portions of the project.
