DESCRIPTION
HGA provided the engineering services for a new 52,000 sq-ft family center located at 2455 Howard Road in Gainesville. This facility is equipped with the largest health & wellness center in North Georgia and includes: wellness, fitness, exercise classes, aerobics, 2 indoor pools (lap pool and family fun pool), 3 gymnasiums, teen and youth rooms, child watch, food court, playground, skate park, and more.
This project contained several unique elements that gave it character. The “Barrel Vaulted” roof areas over the large pool and gym space were framed with “special long-span” bar joists. These joists were spaced at 12’ on center with a 3” deep Acoustical deck spanning between them. The pre-curved standing seam roof deck atop the 3” deck was purely aesthetic. The joists, decking, beams, columns, and even the infill masonry walls were epoxy coated for the wet environment of the pool area. The gymnasium contained an expansion wall that created some complex lateral framing issues. Given the pool depths, our shallow foundations had to be coordinated to be deep enough to prevent surcharging the pool walls. The tall end walls of the pool area contain large open panels allowing an abundance of natural light to enter the space. The radial roofed central corridor forms a high clerestory affect also letting in much natural light. The entry provides a long “barrel vaulted” canopy with signature column elements.
