Haines, Gipson & Associates Inc. provided Civil and Structural engineering services for a new 142,000 sq-ft, 544-bed detention and judicial facility on an 11 acre tract of land in Dalton, GA. The detention facility structure consisted of load bearing masonry walls with precast concrete hollow-core plank floors. The multi-level judicial facility utilized composite structural steel framing with a 5” thick reinforced concrete slab for the elevated floor framing and standard open web bar joists and steel roof deck supported by wide flange beams provided the roof structure. Shallow foundations consisting of isolated spread footings at columns and strip footings beneath continuous walls provided support for the structure. Lateral resistance was provided by concentrically brace steel frames and reinforced masonry shear walls. Site design elements included design of two new entrance drives, 224 parking spaces, site and the associated storm water collection and conveyance systems, BMP’s, and other storm water pollution control measures to comply with the NPDES and local storm water quality mandates.
