DESCRIPTION
Haines, Gipson & Associates, Inc. provided the consulting engineering services for a new, 35,000 sq-ft courthouse facility and government office building for the Board of Commissioners of Crisp County; in the town of Cordele, Georgia. This project presented several economic and functional challenges that required Haines, Gipson & Associates, Inc to provide many alternative solutions. The County had some concerns regarding the transfer of prisoners between the correction facility and the courthouse. HGA coordinated with the architect and client to develop multiple sally port configurations for efficient and secure prisoner transfer. Due to certain revisions in the programming of the building, HGA analyzed multiple basement elevation solutions to meet a very tight project budget. HGA worked with City and County Officials to relocate and re-configure the Veterans Memorial Garden, a historical monument located on the property. HGA also modified the site/grading configuration to accommodate field relocation of uncharted utilities in order to save several large trees and incorporated revised flood plain determination and FEMA map revisions for project design. Unique aspects of the structural design included providing mechanical zones on the roof structure consisting of 6” concrete pads for support of vibratory sensitive mechanical equipment, designing slab on grade to accommodate vehicle loading due to the enclosed sally port, specifying concrete masonry unit holding cells filled with reinforced masonry grout in all masonry cells, design of elevated composite slab floor systems to withstand loading from high density file storage areas, and support of pre-cast concrete elements on the building façade. The structure consisted of steel frame with diagonal bracing for resistance of lateral loading, conventional composite beam and concrete slab elevated floors, and a bar joist and girder roof system.
